Porn, an Aphrodisiac or a Blue-Print to Sexual Violence?

The debate over the Porn Industry has been going on for several years, the crusaders of pornography believe that the exposure to this industry does not incite any form of sexual vioence streak amongst men and is considered to be the safest alternative outlet for assaultive energy.

Advocating it with masturbation as a proxy, the supporters hold that the crimes against women have decreased post the late 1990s with the advent of the internet and availability of pornographic videos, images, texts, audio, etc. online (just a click away). With pornography becoming a core sexual activity, especially amongst the young adults, it has been viewed as a healthy component of their sexuality in daily lives by the propagators. The Czech Republic, Denmark, Japan, China, Hong Kong have seen less rape cases as they eased restrictions on online pornography, adding justification to the observation, UCLA researchers concluded that in comparison to most men, rapists/sexual offenders consume less porn. Is this the reality?

Surprisingly, despite all the good that the porn industry feeds this world with, there has been considerable opposition and a furious demand to ban this industry. Well, to talk of the Indian context, ever since the late 1990s (which is associated with advent of the internet) the freedom to move freely for women has been horrendously curtailed with a spike in rape, child abuse, etc.

It is more dangerous for a woman or a child to be unescorted in an Indian city than it was twenty years ago. Before we conclude that porn solely can’t be blamed for increasing rape cases, let’s learn of an incidence from adivasi Jharkhand, also it is very important to brush up on the fact that ‘rape’ was unheard of in Adivasi India until a few decades ago. In Jharkhand, teenagers and boys as young as 10 years old are watching porn on mobile phones and buy filth for only two rupees from what they call ‘the download shop’ (small shops/hubs that sell pornographic content illegally), the face of Adivasi India took a shameful turn when girls were abducted and gang raped by the these teenage boys in violent manner.

How does this signify the role of porn? Well, when asked both from the victims and the accused, the act and the manner of violence during the act drew inspiration from the content they (accused) watched online. In recent years, the rise in child abuse has seen a sudden spike and surprisingly so has been the search requests like ‘teenage girl **x’, ‘innocent ch**k sucking d**k’, ‘little girl vagina’, and other horrifying and shameful graphics. The propagators shall still pave way for good after Pamela Paul, Testimony for the Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution, "Why the Government Should Care about Pornography.” released statements and reports that enlightened the distorted mentality and a disturbed image of female body and sexuality by men who consume pornography aggresively.

Men confessed that they enjoyed sexual acts online which they once considered atrocious like bestiality, group sex, Hardcore S&M, genital torture, child pornography, etc.

and soon, fitting the women in their pornographic fantasies became a part of their daily lives and took a toll on their mental and physical well-being. The new pornified vision found them viewing their daughters and girls their daughter’s age as the characters they watched online. Well, to justify this observation, a study concluded that men who escape to porn regularly view females around them as a prime trigger for the aphrodisiac and picture them while masturbating.

Not only does porn lead to a corrupt vision, it also gravely affects your work and study environment, men and boys who expose themselves to plethora of erotic content on daily basis find it nearly impossible to control the urge to let go of their sudden desires, men and boys confess of masturbating during the office hours and study hours while they were in office or school after viewing a women (desirable, as they would say) and fixing her in the pornographic scenes immediately in their fantasies. While most women aren’t aware of being viewed as an object, they fall prey to men who fail to over-power their urge and fantasies. Who do we blame?

Moving further to unfold the adverse effects it has on the society, pornography hampers the essence of real human relationships. The content consumed portrays unrealistic expectations for intimacy and body image, generating the idea of being sexually appealing as the only acceptable trait in a partner. Often, the content consumers fail to perceive that what is displayed in a porn video is unreal and does not depict natural intercourse.

The male (believed to consume porn more than females) partner develops undue expectations of a similar course of action, the failure to attain the same from his real life partner saddens him and usually results in a loss of erection, this factor has majorly contributed to men advancing erectile dysfunction. Not only do men face issues, women too develop unreal standards of treatment during the act and distorted expectations of orgasm, the unfulfillment of which results in a dissatisfactory sex life and an unhappy relationship with the partner.

The unmatched body descriptions conveyed by the porn industry is a major reason for body-shaming amongst teenagers and young-adults, women with skinny bodies and smaller breasts are looked down upon and are often bullied for not being attractive enough as they can’t draw enough male attention who believe that a curvy body with bigger breasts is an ideal female body, similarly girls and women who are chubbier and weigh heavy are not accepted as an ideal body as they are viewed to be inefficient in the act owing to their bodies which is again a biased image constituted by the porn industry.

It is not only the women who are bullied, men face issues as well, their sexual performance is often tagged to their bodily strength appearance which at times makes them feel under-confident about themselves, the unreal expectations of the size of penis is one such example which has been ignored for a very long time.

While the effects on the society have been in light for a very long time, the filth and atrocities within the industry are abundant to invite legal actions and ban the entire industry. Most of the female actors are either trafficked into the toxic hole or are manipulated on the pretext of nude modelling and then signing contracts which bring them to this industry. Pornstars (names to be private) have come out in media to draw attention on the plight they face in the industry, they are forced to record an after-statement once they are done shooting which conveys that the entire act was natural and consensual or else they do not get paid, but the reality is, they are beaten with belts and other substances are used to portray swelling and redness which are often viewed as a part of the natural inter-course.

Not only this, when picturing inhumane course of action and anal sex, certain drugs are shoved into them in order to turn the organs numb and avoid any kind of resistance from the female actors. Despite all the menace caused to their bodies, pornstars are paid very little in proportion to the ranking and revenue they generate for the sites and mediators.

The porn industry is also known as the hub of racism, black women are depicted as more slutty, available, thriving for sex and asked to compromise with numerous men at one time known as ‘gang-bang’ which has given rise to gang-rapes all over the world. Asian origin women are portrayed as more submissive and weak in an act and American and European women are pictured as an ideal sexual entity.

The fact that these pornstars lose their privacy and the freedom to move freely without being looked down on and receiving shrewd stares reflects the distorted image we as a society have developed towards pornography, yet fail to ban it on the pretext of safe pleasure.

While technology has definitely made life easier, certain elements have only contributed to cause harm to the human race. While the supporters may continue to believe that rape cases have declined ever since the onset of easily available porn, the reality is far fetched from their belief. Porn - which was introduced with an aim to feed the sexual desires of man (and woman) and generate pleasure, has ended up turning as a food for sexual violence, bias, racism, child abuse and a falsified and pornified vision of the human race.
